Introducing our associate therapists who work across the city, offering face-to-face and online counselling and psychotherapy.

Hayley Johnson

Hayley is a 15 years qualified CBT therapist with experience in cross cultural communication and also has a BA Honours in Gender Studies, Sociology and Anthropology. In addition, Hayley is a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor and trainee psychotherapist, studying Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy in Hull.

Hayley has spent over a decade working with business professionals, expats and everyday people who all wanted to improve their lives and relationships but kept stalling at one hurdle or another.

She enjoys getting to the root of disputes, discovering what triggers and pains the client within themselves and their relationships and then sets out to explore techniques, mindsets and outlooks for an improved peace of mind.

This leads to less anxiety, less self sabotage, more freedom, better sleep and improved life prospects.

Hayley has more recently worked with Body Confidence, Teachers and Parents of Autistic/Special Needs Children, and welcomes clients from other countries and cultural backgrounds.

She is patient, confidential and human centred and believes your thoughts and feelings deserve to be aired and heard.

Colin Bingham

Colin has 17 years experience working with addictions and 35 years working with adults and young people in various helping roles. For several years he has worked as a volunteer and supervisor for Cruse, the national bereavement charity.

Colin is a qualified Integrative Therapist and uses approaches that fit with the way clients wish to work. He has a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and encourages clients to work on strategies between sessions. Colin has also been a Mindfulness practitioner since 2006. He has found all of these approaches helpful in the treatment of anxiety and depression.

Colin is a qualified Further Education teacher and trainer and has facilitated psychoeducational groups since 2006, as well as training Humberside Police, The Fire Service, Social Services and counselling agencies in working with substance misuse.

Colin’s session fee is £45 - he offers a free 20-30 minute consultation and reduced fees for trainee counsellors.

Maria Young

It was through her career as a teacher and her own experience of therapy that Maria decided to become a therapist. She is a humanistic counsellor with an integrative approach encompassing elements of CBT. She also trained in telephone and online counselling.

Maria feels that counselling offers an opportunity to explore what is going on for you in your everyday experience of the world and to make the changes that enable you to become who you would like to be. She believes awareness and understanding are the key elements that enable change to take place.

She has worked within the NHS Let’s Talk service for over 5 years. In this work she has helped people with a range of mental health issues and diversity in terms of age, culture, social background, gender and sexuality and with a wide range of challenges such as

  • Relationship issues

  • Suicidal thoughts

She is also able to work with people whose first language is not English.

Maria’s fees are £45 for a 60 minute appointment.

Maria is a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and psychotherapists (BACP) and is insured with Holistic Insurance Services.

Amy Emmerson, Trainee Psychotherapist, Hull

Amy Emmerson

Amy is a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, continuing to study at the Ellesmere Centre of Psychotherapy Training in Hull, to become a Psychotherapist. Amy’s training is in Transactional Analysis which she uses to support people in understand themselves i.e. how their past impacts their present, so that they can make the changes they want to make and live the lives they want. 

Previous to her training, Amy worked in the charity sector in different projects supporting adults with disabilities into employment and supporting people who were at risk of homelessness.  In these supporting roles she often felt that the practical support she was offering wasn’t enough for people to make the lasting changes they wanted in their lives. This combined with her own experience of personal therapy made her want to train in Psychotherapy. 

Amy a big believer in the healing properties of nature so together with providing therapy at the offices on Princes Avenue, Hull - she also provides outdoor walk and talk therapy.

Andrew McDonald

Andrew is a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in Transactional Analysis. During his training he completed his clinical hours working with survivors of childhood abuse (emotional, psychological and sexual).

Alongside his practice, Andrew is a nationally licenced vulnerability trainer, delivering training to organisations across the country, in the areas of trauma, vulnerability and the impact of these on a person’s life. Part of this work is training groups on how they can engage with people effected by trauma, and education around the pathway to healing.

Andrew works to facilitate your awareness of repeated patterns of behaviour, working out together why life events have turned out the way they have, and discussing how to move forwards in a way which helps you to be more in control of your life, and decision making.

Debbie Thomson

Debbie a qualified as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and trainee Psychotherapist. Debbie has a long history of working in mental health services supporting adults and young people with a range of mental health difficulties. For 13 of those years, Debbie worked for the NHS where she gained specialist experience in supporting individuals affected by eating disorders. Debbie also founded and chaired a local charitable organisation for people effected by obsessive compulsive disorder.

Debbie is passionate about working with people struggling with their mental health and combines her experience, psychoeducational and relational skills when working with her clients. Debbie’s main therapeutic modality is Transactional Analysis (TA) but she also works as an integrative therapist; meaning she incorporates other models into her practice.

Debbie favours working co-creatively with her clients and encourages creativity in the therapy space which can be beneficial for connecting with the other parts of the self. Debbie is warm and nurturing in her approach and believes everybody has a human need to be seen, heard, and validated.

Debbie’s areas of interest are:

  • Eating disorders & disordered eating

  • Obsessive compulsive behaviours/disorder

  • Hormone difficulties, perimenopause & menopause

Debbie is insured with Balens and is a member of UKCP.

Debbie works face-to-face with individuals and couples. Her current fee is £55 per 60 minutes for individuals, £75 for couples and £110 per 90 minutes for couples.

Debbie offers a free, initial, 30-minute consultation via phone or online.
